About

Karen started her work in midwifery as a lay midwife in 1993. Prior to that time, she apprenticed with other lay midwives and worked as a certified labor assistant through the Informed Birth and Parenting program where she was also certified as a birth assistant.

In 1995, the North American Registry of Midwives developed a certification for midwives who learned their craft outside of the medical system known as the Certified Professional Midwife (CPM). In 1997, Karen completed her CPM through the PEP process.

To date, Karen has attended over 1700 births as the primary midwife and hundreds of others as an apprentice, assistant, or doula.

In 2016, she completed an Associates Degree of Applied Science in Direct Entry Midwifery and became a MEAC, Midwifery Education Accreditation Council, Accredited Midwife. In 2018 she became a Licensed Direct-Entry Midwife in Delaware and in 2020 for Maryland.

Karen is a member of Association of Independent Midwives of Maryland (AIMM), the Delaware CPM Midwives Association, and the newly formed Chesapeake CPM.
